Admissions
Registration for the 2025-2026 school year has currently finished. Should there be any change, we will publish an update here.
Registration for Year 1 (Preparatory)
A child must be aged 5 by the beginning of the school year to be considered for Year 1. Siblings of children already at RICE receive priority. Around April or May, we invite continuing families and new families interested in having their child join Year 1, to come for the Entrance Assessment. The Entrance Assessment covers English, Math, Amharic as well as assessing cognitive and aptitude ability. A child must pass these. For students who successfully pass this stage, there is also an interview with parents.

Registration for Year 2 – Year 13 (Grade 1 – Grade 12)
In May, current families are asked to make a commitment for the following school year. This helps us to see what spaces we will have available in other Year classes. Depending on where spaces are available we begin to invite new families to bring their child for an Entrance Assessment. The Entrance Assessment covers English, Math, and Amharic (for Year 1-6). For Year 2 only there is also an assessment covering cognitive and aptitude ability. A child must be aged 6 by the beginning of the school year to be considered for Year 2. For Year 7 upwards English, Math, and Science are assessed. A child must pass these. For students who successfully pass this stage, there is also an interview with both students and parents.
Admission Process
January
The Admissions process begins each January with families registering their interest online (through this website) for their child/children to join RICE. Registration for the waiting list remains open for 4 weeks from the start date in January.
January
February & March
The waiting list is reviewed, initially for interest in Year 1 (Preparatory). Priority is given to siblings of families already in RICE and then to those who have registered for the third year in a row (or longer).
April & May
Assessments are given for children wanting to join Year 1.
April & May
May, June & July
Usually by late May we have a clearer idea of what spaces will be available in Years 2-13. This then determines which children will be invited for Assessments for Year 2-13. We will only invite children for Assessment if known spaces are available. There will be an interview to complete the admission process.
Please note
- We do NOT operate on a first-come-first-served basis. The waiting list is used to identify priority and where known spaces are available in classes.
- Registration on a waiting list is NOT carried forward to the next year. Families are required to register each year if unsuccessful in their registration in the previous year.
- Where a family is registering for the third year (or more) in a row, they will be given priority, after sibling children, where spaces are available.
